A year without buying plastic?

On the first of July 2013 I began a year in which I couldn't buy any plastic at all. At the end of that year, this is the entire amount of waste (landfill) that I produced. The image itself answers a lot of the 'why's I might challenge myself to such a hard task. Please read on if it interests, challenges, inspires, perplexes you.
My waste:
Specialist cat food - my cat has suffered from allergies her whole life. I wasn't prepared to make her suffer as a result of my choice to avoid plastic
Receipts - thermal printers only work on paper imbedded with plastic
Accidental plastic - not knowing that there was plastic in something when I purchased it
Gift plastic - people carefully choosing plastic free gifts and then sending it to me in plastic courier bags
Hungry plastic - this didn't happen very often thankfully, but once or twice I was forced to buy food in plastic out of hunger and lack of choice

  1. Hi there!
I have just been on your blog and I absolutely love how intensive, well researched motivated you are!

I share the same interests and passion as you do. My name is Kohl Tyler and I work part time at greenpeace NZ and also study fine art at Whitecliffe College of arts and Design.
My partner and I are moving towards becoming plastic free also (and I totally agree with you about Lush plastic free shampoo, its amazing)
I also am using my work to campaign against plastic in NZ, starting with plastic bags.
A few weeks ago I wrote a petition calling our minister for the environment to ban plastic bags in New Zealand nation wide. I have almost reached 200 signatures in just one week and I believe that it could become much much bigger.
I was wondering if you would be happy to share the petition within your social circles so it can carry on gaining traction.

I'm also interested in personally helping you spread the word however I can-your blog is pretty awesome. Please let me know if there is any volunteer work I can help out with. I have experience in fine art/ photography/fundraising and many more areas.

    1. Hi Kohl, I am thrilled to support your petition. It's wonderful to see someone take the lead with this, so thank you very much.
I have plugged it on my facebook page and the home page of this site, so I hope that helps you get some traction.
Also so thanks so much for your generous offer of help AND way to go working for Greenpeace! I have a lot of respect for that organisation and am a proud supporter. You are obviously a passionate person and a change maker. I admire that very much.
